How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two pins for the connector and they perform different functions but the best method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors are not firing any more. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero Ohm. So i assume the problem is in another check here place.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car can start if the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is plugged in, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is zero.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. read more I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the audi spare key RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is website easy to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire while in gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and should be replaced. The good news is that they are quite affordable and easy to find, especially in the case of the Bosch model, which is what we have. If you prefer, GM's version of this component is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a myriad of issues within your vehicle. It's an essential component of your Audi's transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is rotating. When this sensor fails, it will cause problems for the transmission as well as the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via a grey wire. The ECU then uses and processes the signal to control fuel, timig and boost, and also transmitting it to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. There should be the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these points.
